Led by a local experienced, STGA accredited guide this four hour tour offers an exceptional overview of Orkney’s natural and historic heritage, its places, its people and its ambitions for the future. You will meet your tour guide, driver and vehicle at Kirkwall.
Departing Kirkwall via Scapa Flow, Orkney’s exceptional, huge, natural harbour, a home to Viking Fleets, Oil Tankers and (most famously) to the Royal Navy in both World Wars, the tour heads to the Scenic South Isles where you will pause at Hurtiso viewpoint for an overview of Scapa Flow. You then head down to the Italian Chapel, built by Italian POWs during World War II and preserved and used today.
We then make our way to the West side of Orkney. There we visit two of the component parts of the ‘Heart of Neolithic Orkney’ UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy extended tours at the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar.
After visiting the Neolithic Stone Circles we begin heading north up the West coast of Orkney taking a few moments to pause in the picturesque marine village of Stromness, Orkneys second largest town. Our route then takes us to the magnificent, towering cliffs at Yesnaby - hewn out on Orkney’s wild Atlantic coast. From there it’s time to return to Kirkwall at a leisurely pace the tour takes a panoramic route which, on clear days, offers magnificent views out to the smaller North Isles of Orkney. Your tour finishes back at the original departure point.
