Description

Hidden Orkney - A seven hour inclusive tour that takes you away from the usual routes. When a big ship calls Orkney buzzes - but even then there are many quieter, hidden, less accessible places. This  14 seater based tour is about some of those places.  Our aim is simple - to unpack Orkney’s crazy amazingness for you.   First we depart the Kirkwall Travel Centre for the Iron Age - Broch of Gurness. Located on the coast with Eynhallow Sound and the island of Rousay as a backdrop this site shows occupation from around 500BCE to about 800 AD and encompasses Pictish, Iron Age and Viking elements. The village at Gurness is the best-preserved of all Iron Age broch villages. There are numerous houses.  From the broch we head up the hill to wind turbines and an RSPB Bird Hide. If we are lucky we might find a red throated diver (known as a raingoose in Orkney) to view, or perhaps geese swooping between the wind turbines as they come into land. On a clear day there are incredible views to the north. Next we take a journey along the coast, and then over moorland and via a small village to Corrigal Farm Museum. Orkney’s farming history is set out here housed in original stone buildings each with a story to tell.  From Corrigal we head west - to the Atlantic Coast and stop just below soaring Marwick Head.   After a generous pause we head down the coastline to Orkney’s second town - Stromness. There’s free time there to take a walk, visit the Pier Arts Centre or seek out a dram.  Leaving Stromness we head around Scapa Flow, pausing at Earls Bu in Orphir - it features in Orkney’s Viking Saga and has obvious, upstanding remains of the Round Kirk and the Norse drinking hall. Then, continuing along the north cost of Scapa Flow we return to Kirkwall. Cost includes ALL entrance fees.

Please Note on Friday 15th May, Friday 5th June, Saturday 13th June,  Sunday 2nd August, Sunday 16th August and Friday 11th September we shall be visiting Kirbuster Farm Museum. The last un-restored example of a traditional 'firehoose' in Northen Europe. Wander through the Edwardian parlour and Victorian Gardens or spend your time browsing the farming memorabilla and enjoy a game of putting on the green,
